Square Dancing and the Science of Healthy Aging: The Village Squares Visit Aviv Clinics
January 1, 2026
Last August, the Village Squares were pleased to participate in “Square Dancing 101: A Rootin’ Tootin’ Social,” an event hosted by Aviv Clinics here in The Villages. This lively evening offered Aviv’s patients, alumni, and staff an opportunity to experience mainstream square dancing and connect with fellow community members. But the event also served a larger purpose: it showcased the natural alignment between our club’s activities and Aviv’s science-based, healthy aging programs.
At first glance, a square dancing club and an innovative hyperbaric oxygen clinic may seem worlds apart. But at their core, both champion brain and body health, especially as we age.
Square dancing is far more than a recreational pastime. It’s a coordinated blend of physical movement, mental engagement, and social connection. Dancers listen to calls, process them quickly, remember the sequences, and respond in real time. Those skills rely on attention, working memory, and mental flexibility. Aviv Clinics takes a similarly active approach to brain health, using cognitive training and advanced therapeutic methods designed to support memory, processing speed, and overall brain performance. Both organizations understand that cognitive health isn’t passive; our brains need regular exercise.
The physical benefits of square dancing are just as meaningful. It’s more than stepping in time to music. Dancers build balance, stability, and mobility, and improve their bone health and cardiovascular function. Its low-impact nature makes it accessible for adults across a wide range of fitness levels, while still providing a challenge. Aviv Clinics emphasizes these same principles by incorporating customized fitness plans into its medical program to help improve gait, coordination, strength, and endurance.
And then there’s the most important connection of all: community. Both the Village Squares and Aviv Clinics recognize that social engagement is a vital pillar of long-term well-being. Our club offers a welcoming environment where dancers form new friendships, practice teamwork, and share the joy of learning something new. Aviv Clinics fosters a similar sense of belonging among its patients and staff, creating a supportive atmosphere where people feel encouraged and connected. It offers more than treatment—it offers connection: a community of peers, caregivers, and staff rooting for one another’s growth. These relationships, whether on the dance floor or in a clinic, are crucial for healthy aging.
