Our Club

The Village Squares is primarily a Mainstream square dance club in The Villages, Florida. Initiated by Judy Mason in 2018, and with guidance from Kip Moulton (our snowbird caller), we recruited Don Hanhurst to be our club caller. With Mainstream lessons on Tuesdays and club dances on Wednesdays, we were off and making a name for ourselves. However, the activity was limited in that it was only available to Village residents.

In the fall of 2023, when Don was hinting at retiring, we recruited Dave Vieira to take over when Don made the big decision. Dave stepped in to be the club caller when Don retired in the fall of 2024. With this big change, we decided on another big change — open the club to the public. Anyone between 12 – 112 years of age who dances at the Mainstream level is welcome to join us. Below the age of 12, one must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Our Callers

We are very fortunate to have two callers who are well known and respected both nationally and internationally.

Don Hanhurst started square dancing in 1949 and began calling in 1959.  He was the club caller for over 20 clubs in numerous states as well as calling for state conventions, national conventions, and international events.  In addition, in the 70s he had a tape and record service with over 1800 monthly subscribers worldwide. Don has held assorted positions in callers’ associations wherever he lived.  He was a guest caller in New Zealand, Canada, Holland, Austria, and Germany.  Since moving to Florida in 1981 he formed or helped to form 13 different square dance clubs.  He has been the club caller for the Village Squares since 2019.

Dave Vieira started square dancing in 1975 while serving in the US Air Force in West Germany.  He began calling in 1976. Over the years he has called in Australia, Japan, the Philippines, and many European countries as well. Upon returning to the United States, he joined the Texas Callers Association.  He has called at national square dance conventions and in over 27 states.  In 2015 he was inducted into the Texas Square Dance Callers Hall of Fame.  Dave and his wife Michele recently moved to Ocala, Florida and he is now teaching Mainstream and Plus classes for Village Squares.
